What is Foxhunting?
Ham radio foxhunting, also known as "hidden transmitter hunting," is a popular activity where participants use their radio equipment to locate a hidden transmitter or "fox." It's a fun, challenging, and often competitive event enjoyed by amateur radio operators worldwide.
How Does it Work?
- A small radio transmitter (the "fox") is hidden in a particular area, and its signal is broadcast on a known frequency.
- Participants, or "hunters," use directional antennas and radio receivers to track the signal and locate the hidden transmitter.
- The first hunter to find the fox wins the hunt.
Equipment Needed
- Handheld radio receiver
- Directional antenna
- Attenuator (to reduce signal strength as you get closer to the transmitter)
- Good map and compass for navigation
Tips for Success
- Practice your directional finding skills before the event.
- Pay attention to changes in signal strength as you move.
- Work as a team to triangulate the fox's location faster.
